At 4.30 am we reached the first place Bharananganam. Then we got some time for became fresh. After that,we spent some time in Bharananganam. It is the shrine and Church of st.Alphonsa. It is a pilgrim center.
BHARANANGANAM
Bharananganam is known for its many aristocratic and affluent Nasrani families who've branched out from the place to other agrarian areas of Kerala, following the early agrarian expansion of Central Travancore, in the mid-19th century. This expansion lasted till the 1980s, with the last few waves of migrant Syrian Christians from in and around the area, migrating to the hilly villages of Northern Kerala.
This small town is known as Lisieux ofIndia after the birthplace of St. Theresa of Lisieux in France, The thousand year old St. Mary's Syro-Malabar Catholic Church here is one of the famous pilgrim centers of the Christians inKerala. Also known as Anakkallu Palli, it is the place holding the mortal remains of Saint Alphonsa (1910–1946). Saint Alphonsa is the first woman to be conferred sainthood from the Kerala Church, which traces its origins to the visit of St. Thomas around 2,000 years ago to preach the gospel in India, and the second Indian to get that status after St Gonsalo Garcia. The death anniversary of Saint Alphonsa, which falls on 28 July is an important day for the devotees. Every year on this day, thousands of devotees visit this holy shrine, where the mortal remains of the saint is preserved, to pray and seek her blessings.
Saint Alphonsa lived a saintly life and was recognized as a saintly person during her lifetime. Even at a young age she showed a great zeal for suffering and she used to pray fervently and longed for sacrifice and fasting as and when possible. She believed that she must endure all things that tests her will and offer them to the Lord. It is said that in spite of her painful diseases, she was cheerful to the last. It was her students who established the cult of Saint Alphonsa. After her death, they began visiting her tomb and offering prayers. As they continued, they started receiving favours. Ever since, her tombhas been a centre of pilgrimage and innumerable miracles. The first officially confirmed miracle was that of, a disabled child miraculously cured of his ailment and his limbs restored, due to prayers at the altar of Sister Alphonsa's shrine. The miracle was approved in 1985 and the beatification of Sister Alphonsa was proclaimed by Pope John Paul II, during his visit to India in 1986. There is a two floored structure in front of the shrine which was originally the Papal podium for the beatification ceremony on 8 Feb.1986. Sister Alphonsa became Saint Alphonsa after she was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI at a ceremony at St. Peter's Square,Vatican on 12 October 2008. The Claristwhere Sr. Alphonsa lived is located near St. Mary's Syro-Malabar Catholic Forane Church in Bharananganam. There is a museum adjacent to the convent chapel where the personal belongings of the Saint are well preserved.
KURISUMALA
Kurisumala Ashram is situated at a serene atmosphere in a vast area of land where we can visit after taking permission. From the main gate to the second gate we can go by car and from there we have to walk. After walking up the steep road on the hill we reach the premises of the Ashram we can feel the hush apart from the slight murmur of the breeze. Up the hill we can see the small monastery to the left, the chapel in the right side, the gardens and then the dairy farm. The monks living in the ashram make their livelihood by breeding cows and selling the milk. The monks who wear a long loose dress in Kavi color wont wear sandals and they cultivate vegetables, cook their food and wash their cloth and have regular meditation and prayer apart from the work. We visited the chapel, the small library and then went to see the dairy farm and breeding center. We couldn't go to the Resurrection Garden where the monks who passed away are buried. The serene atmosphere, the simple life style of the monks, the variety of cows, the breeding center, the chapel and the beautiful gardening all will give us a divine feeling
VAGAMON MEADOWS/ BARREN HILLS/MOTTAKUNNU
A collection of small meadows spread over a large area. There are interlocked small ponds at the valley of several meadows. This is one of the major movie shooting locations in Vagamon.
Ideal time to visit the meadows is when the sun is not very intense.
PINE VALLEYVALLEYVALLEYVALLEY
I really love the pine valley at Vagamon where the lofty pine trees are planted in rows because the serene atmosphere and cool breeze always relax the body and mind. Been there several times and during my recent visit, though it was drizzling I went there with my friends and few of my friends who were visiting the area for the first time wanted to spend more time there. This time we met several foreign tourists too and it seems the Pine forest is gaining popularity.
PARUNTHUMPARA
Parunthumpara is a village in the Indianstate of Kerala's Idukki District.[1] It is a small scenic location near Wagamon en route to Peerumedu. Parunthin Para also known as 'Parunthumpara' (the eagle rock). From here, the Makarajyothiof Sabarimala is visible. The main attractions of Parunthumpara are Suicide Point and Tagor Head (a rock that appears to have the shape of Tagor, an Indian poet's, head). A nearby tourist spot is Thekkady.
