PERFORMING ARTS
BHARATHANATYAM

Bharathanatyam is a major genre of Indian classical dance that originated in the Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions. Traditionally Bharathanatyam has been a solo dance that was performed exclusively by women, and expressed Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas, particularly of shaivism but also of vaishanavism and Shaktism.

SEQUENCE
The traditional Bharathanatyam performance follows a seven-part order of presentation. The presentation begins with rhythmic invocation called the “Alaripu”. It is a pure dance, which combines a thank you and benediction for blessings from the Gods and Goddesses, the guru and the gathered performance team.

MUDRAS
The communication through symbols is in the form of expressive gestures and facial expressions and pantomime set to music.

MOHINIYATTAM
Mohiniyattam is a semi-classical dance form of Kerala. It is performed by women. The word Mohini means a maiden who steals the heart of the on looker. It is thought that vaishnava devotees gave the name of mohiniyattam to this dance form. The basic dance steps of Mohiniyattam are the Adavus-Tagnam, Jaganam, Dhaganam and Sammisram.

SEQUENCE
The repertoire sequence of Mohiniyattam is similar to that of Bharatanatyam, and contains seven items that are performed to a structure described in classical dance texts: cholkettu, Jatisvaram or more precisely swarayeti, varnam.

MUDRAS
Mudras can be called the alphabets of classical dance which help in conveying expression more profoundly. Alphabets from words, similarly, combine mudras forms meaning.
